Helen is a qualified lawyer specialising in regulatory risk and compliance issues. She works on a consultancy basis with law firms, other regulated entities and individuals to assess compliance vulnerabilities; identify issues that require attention; and prepare an action plan of practical solutions to help resolve them, including the implementation of appropriate safeguards and systems to support compliance. She also specialises in applications to the SRA for authorisation, both for traditional law firms (recognised bodies) and for licensed bodies (“alternative business structures”).
Helen is an experienced trainer who prepares and delivers training and seminars on regulatory compliance issues and professional conduct. She also speaks on behalf of the Law Society at its conferences and training sessions.
For over 12 years Helen worked for the Law Society and the Solicitors Regulation Authority in a variety of roles. These included managing a team of solicitors and regulatory experts as a senior ethics adviser at the SRA and carrying out regulatory monitoring visits for the SRA as a practice standards adviser. In both roles a high level of knowledge, sensitivity and proficiency was required. Helen is the co-author, with Tracey Calvert, of the Law Society’s Exit Strategies Toolkit. She also writes articles for the Law Society’s Risk and Compliance Service and the Legal Compliance Bulletin.
